Morning class with XXI: a collaborative group of teachers working to question, progress and expand their teaching practices.

These classes are intermediate-advanced level contemporary dance technique classes, open to everyone. Each class will take a different form, following the lead of each day's rotating teacher. The class will end with a discussion/reflection.

XXI is comprised of:
Alexa Mardon
Lexi Vajda
Emmalena Fredriksson
Francesca Frewer
Rianne Svelnis
Daisy Thompson

with the support of Mascall Dance.

XXi a cohort of teachers dedicated to expanding and interrogating their teaching practices, moving away from harmful training models, and practicing their teaching with a group of willing dancers.

XXI seeks to disrupt assumptions about what a professional level dance class is and can be. We examine how we use language, structure a class, and encourage the agency of each dancer to participate in the way that is best for them on that day.

The classes are attending by as many of the teaching cohort as possible as well as dancers from the community, and are followed by a discussion with everyone present about training, its purposes and how we could be doing it differently and better.

it is doing this by having the participants give us feedback, ask questions all which feed into the next class. Some of the most notable things that have come up are assumptions about language : how we propose different variations on an exercise, for example: by giving the most simple exercise first and then giving options for more challenging physicalities, rather than setting up a hierarchy in class that deems the harder the better;  acknowledging and trusting that each participant is the expert of their own experience; allowing and encouraging that "participation looks in many ways" including sitting, writing, doing less or more; and being the agent of our own curiosities within the class, to follow a teachers lead but not feel obligated to have their questions be our questions.
